Monday September 3rd - Friday September 7th 2007
University of Bristol
The hyperbolic metric is both a powerful tool in complex analysis and an
interesting object of study in its own right. This workshop is intended to
serve both as a research conference for mathematicians whose research involves
the hyperbolic metric, and as an introduction to the subject for graduate
students who wish to learn about it from scratch. The workshop will
feature two introductory courses of five lectures each:
Professor Alan Beardon (University of Cambridge) The hyperbolic metric and its properties
Professor
David Minda (University of Cincinnati)
Applications of the hyperbolic metric in complex analysis
The workshop will begin with registration and a buffet lunch
from 12.00 on Monday 3rd September and
conclude with lunch on Friday 7th September. The first two sessions will
consist only of introductory lectures, so those already familiar with the
hyperbolic metric may if they wish arrive at lunchtime on Tuesday 4th.
The afternoon sessions will consist of research talks and survey talks on
various aspects of the subject. There will be discussion sessions led by the
lecturers, for those attending the introductory courses to consolidate what they
have learnt. Several rooms will available throughout the week for collaborative
work.
Lunch will be provided each day, and there will be a registration fee of £15 to
cover this. For evening meals, there are many good options within easy walking
distance of the university in Bristol's city centre. There will be no
formal conference dinner.
Funding
We have some funding from the Heilbronn Institute to contribute towards travel and accommodation expenses for UK graduate students attending the workshop, especially those who do not already have EPSRC funding for research-related travel. If you would like to be considered for funding, please let us know when you register.
Accommodation
We will provide accommodation for speakers (at the
Marriott Hotel on College Green in Bristol city centre).
Other participants should arrange their own accommodation for the week. Here is
some useful
accommodation information.
