Three distinct problems in classical water wave theory are considered. It
is shown how, by using complementary formulations coupled with a Galerkin
approximation based on physical properties of the solution, extremely
accurate estimates for the reflection and transmission properties due
to scattering of an incident plane wave can be found in each case.
