What is Skittles then ?
Here's an excellent action shot of what is supposed to happen
in skittles - first shot hits the front pin first. As an expert, I
would say that this shot looks as though it's going to result in
a `ladies three' - Inequalities speak for a ball that takes out
the front pin and the two pins midway along the rear diagonal
but nothing else (origin of `ladies three' unknown)
This diagram shows the terminology used to describe various
parts of the alley and set up. The `vicars' are a name used
by Dave Green - I believe their official names are the `quarters'.
Ackroyd's gap is plenty wide enough to pass through without
taking any skittles down, and is named after a former Inequalities skittle
player called Roger Ackroyd who, I'm told, had an uncanny ability
to be able to do this on a regular basis. Roger Ackroyd's Auntie
never played for us, however. This phrase originated from
`anti-ackroyd', but there is more humour to be found in Auntie Ackroyd.
