From numerology to number theory: the fascination of numbers

6pm on 25th February, 2016

Lecture Theatre 3 in the School of Chemistry. No booking required.

Professor Emmanuel Peyre of the University of Grenoble, who is a current IAS Benjamin Meaker Visiting Professor at the University of Bristol.

Starting with the ancient Babylonians, strange relations between numbers have long been investigated. In the history of mathematics, such relations have proved an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the creation of new theories and tools. Today they still form a central theme of research in mathematics with a surprising number of applications to everyday life.
