Microresonators

    Microresonators are devices that trap light by total internal reflection, and can be used to construct micron sized lasers. Here we combine the very high Q-values (ie lifetimes) of a circular resonator with directivity obtained by breaking the symmetry with a small or pointlike scatterer to optimise the properties of such lasers. The equations can also describe other circular resonators a little larger than the wavelength, such as microwaves on scales of centimetres. One unexpected feature of the solutions is that the optimal parameters are well described in the ray approximation.
